PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to demonstrate understanding of gas pipeline installation systems and equipment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Describe typical gas pipeline applications in South Africa.
  • Describe typical gas pipeline and pipe network layouts and -configurations.
  • Describe different pipeline system components.
  • Describe different pipeline and pipe network control equipment and systems.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the gas installations environment, by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this unit standard are essential for upliftment, social and economic transformation in the gas installation environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The context of this unit standard assumes an existing or new gas pipeline system installation site. The scope of this unit standard includes one of the following installation types, but is not limited to:
  • Long-distance transfer gas pipelines.
  • Local gas pipe networks.

    Describe different pipeline system components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Pipeline system components should include but are not limited to fittings, valves, shut-off valves, spades, manifolds, filters, traps, expansion loops and bellows, slides, pipe racks, pipe markers and corrosion protection systems.

    The different pipeline and pipe network components are identified using accepted industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic working principles of typical pipeline and pipe network components are described with the assistance of freehand drawings and by using scientific principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Indicators and reasons for poor performance of pipeline and pipe network components are described using typical industry examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Corrosion protection methods for gas pipelines and networks are described in terms of fit for purpose considerations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe different pipeline and pipe network control equipment and systems. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Control equipment should include but is not limited to transmitters, regulators, control valves, relief valves, pressure reducing stations, compressor stations, metering stations and pig system.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 3 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an Assessor with considerable first hand experience in gas installations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions is required.
