PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Persons credited with unit standard are able to use supporting systems and applications as well as reference material to source a range of load data, perform loadsheet calculations, identify and maintain the optimum aircraft centre of gravity and determine the position of the trimmable horizontal stabiliser for take-off in order to ensure the safe and optimal loading of aircraft. Learners will be capable of compiling automated and manual loadsheets as well as manual trimsheets.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Compiling and generating manual and automated loadsheets.
  • Generating a Loading Instruction Report.
  • Calculating a manual aircraft trimsheet.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Mathematics at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Physical Science at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Unit Standard: Calculate and adjust aircraft weight and balance parameters.
  • Unit Standard ID: 120157: Demonstrate understanding of aeroplane loading.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Compile a manual loadsheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Aircraft data is sourced in order to determine which data is applicable for the specific aircraft type and configuration.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Aircraft operating weights and load figures are obtained and incorporated into the loadsheet calculations.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
  • Aircraft Operating weights includes ramp, taxi, take off, landing, zero fuel and maximum allowed take off, maximum certified and structural weights.
  • Load includes water, fuel, accepted passenger, cargo and mail.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The total operating weight is compared with the aircraft structural design weights to ensure that the aircraft structural design weight is not exceeded.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The consequences of exceeding the aircraft operating and structural design weights are explained in terms of safe flight operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Excess weight and volumetric capacity are calculated and recorded to provide for possible load demand.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Loadsheet and notification to pilot in command (NOTOC) are compiled and dispatched to roleplayers to act upon.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Generate an automated loadsheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A flight record is created in order to initiate the loadsheet calculation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The consequences of illegal access and usage of a Departure Control System is explained in terms of flight safety.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The booked passenger, cargo and mail load are recorded according to specific aircraft type and configuration.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Recorded includes accounting for, reviewing and adjusting.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Traffic load and operating data are captured to complete the calculation matrix.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Aircraft hold/seating configuration is matched to accommodate the load booked.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Unit load devices are determined in terms of booked load and aircraft specific load configuration.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
Optimum aircraft weight and balance parameters are verified to ensure the safe load and balance of the flight to be operated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8
Loadsheet and notification to pilot in command (NOTOC) are compiled and dispatched to roleplayers to act upon.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Generate a Loading Instruction Report.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Load is prioritized to facilitate off-loading decisions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Load is distributed according to Standard Operating Procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Loading Instruction Report is compiled and dispatched to loading staff according to Standard Operating Procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Optimum aircraft centre of gravity condition is determined in compliance with operational efficiency, safety and legal requirements.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Calculate aircraft trim manually, according to aircraft type.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Aircraft type includes but is not limited to model, configuration and operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The dry operating index is calculated and transferred to the trim sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Passenger, cargo and mail weight is distributed in order to ensure that the Zero Fuel Weight Index is within the operator's Zero Fuel Weight envelope.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The position of the trimmable horizontal stabiliser is determined based on take-off weight in order to maintain the centre of gravity within operational envelope.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
