PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Persons credited with this unit standard are able to source the flight folio, prepare flight following systems, including flight termination, communicate with roleplayers for the purposes of disseminating information, addressing requests for support from the flight deck crew and facilitating specialist decision-making and process the flight history documentation in order to provide operational and strategic support for a flight.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Preparing for monitoring flight.
  • Performing flight following.
  • Analysing evolving conditions.
  • Finalising the flight following process.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Mathematics at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Physical Science at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Flight following includes but is not limited to monitoring the ground movements, aircraft position whilst in flight and monitoring environmental and operational conditions and events.
  • Roleplayers include but are not limited to flight deck crew, pilot in command, Chief Pilot or designated alternate and Operations Control.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Prepare for monitoring flight.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A flight folio containing the operational flight plan and load control documentation is sourced to facilitate the monitoring of the operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Flight following tools are prepared for use to ensure the relevant data is available.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The correlation between graphic data and flight plan navigational data is checked and confirmed to ensure accurate data capture.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
All communication systems are tested to confirm serviceability.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Perform flight following.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Progress of flight is monitored against the operational flight plan to determine progress or deviations from planned route and schedule.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Communications are initiated according to standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
True cause and extent of deviations is determined in order to establish the impact on scheduled operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Information is disseminated to roleplayers in order that they can take action.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Flight termination is monitored to conclude the flight following process.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Analyse evolving conditions.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Evolving conditions may include but are not limited weather conditions, natural disasters/abnormal natural phenomena, actual aircraft position reports versus planned aircraft positions, aircraft fuel and technical status, valid over flight and landing clearance window, route constraints/restrictions, aero-political factors, air traffic navigation environment, developments in route structures and airport facilities, manufacture's airworthiness directives and services bulletins, unsafe and/or emergency conditions on board and security situations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The latest meteorological facility reports are obtained and analysed to determine if the operation may continue as planned and if not, contingency plans are initiated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Flight deck crew is kept updated with additional available information on routine and changing meteorological conditions and irregularities of facilities and services to facilitate decisions that may require intervention.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Interventions are initiated, on the basis of any irregular event, in order to have the appropriate facilities and services available as required.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Technical non-standard situations are evaluated and appropriate support services are contacted to facilitate specialist decision-making.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Finalise the flight following process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Flight history documentation is processed in accordance with the regulations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Handover documentation is completed to ensure continuity of flight following and the operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Dispatcher and flight crew debriefing is conducted as required, in compliance with regulations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The flight folio containing operational flight plan, load control and other supporting documentation is archived in accordance with regulations.
