PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who are responsible for performing screening for respiratory functioning in an occupational setting and/or office that complies with current established occupational standards.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Prepare for a spirometry examination.
  • Conduct a spirometry screening test on a patient.
  • Evaluate, record and report spirometry test results.

  • Communication Skills at NQF Level 4.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Includes examinations that are performed for the purpose of screening and monitoring respiratory function and establishing reversibility of respiratory status in all occupational and/or office settings.
  • Does NOT apply to provocation testing in the occupational setting.
  • All actions are carried out in terms of the current specified legal requirements, manufacturer's specifications where applicable and standard operating procedures of the specific occupational setting.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for a spirometry screening test. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for carrying out spirometry screening are explained in terms of the prevention of chronic lung illnesses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Volume and biological measurements of the spirometry equipment are recorded for baseline comparisons and deviations are identified and corrected to prevent false-negative results. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct a spirometry screening test on a designated patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A respiratory health history is obtained and recorded for post-test or future reference. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The health history should include current and past:
  • Physical assessment including age, mass, height, gender.
  • State of overall health.
  • Occupational risk exposure profile.
  • Smoking habits.
  • Acute and chronic medication.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The procedure is demonstrated pre-testing to allay patient's fears and obtain maximum patient cooperation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Clear instructions, visual contact and encouragement are given to the patient throughout the procedure to ensure accurate outcomes and in terms of good clinical practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The number of spirograms as required by the applicable standards are produced. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Evaluate, record and report spirometry test results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The spirometry test results are recorded and graded for the purpose of diagnosis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The patient is referred, with accompanying records, to the relevant health care professionals for diagnosis and possible medical treatment.

  • Institutions offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as providers by the relevant ETQA or ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.

  • Assessors and moderators must be in possession of an equivalent or higher qualification that of the learner and must be experienced in the testing, evaluating, interpreting and recording of spirometry screening testing.
