PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who are responsible for screening for workplace-induced hearing impairments in an occupational setting or workplace. Those credited with this unit standard will be able to implement, interpret, evaluate and report on audiometric screening that complies with current established occupational standards.

Competence in this unit standard will enable the learner to:
  • Prepare for an audiometric screening test.
  • Conduct an audiometric screening test on a patient.
  • Interpret, evaluate, record and report the audiometric screening test results.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • All actions are carried out in terms of the current specified legal requirements, manufacturer's specifications where applicable and standard operating procedures of the specific occupational setting.
  • Learners are expected to comply at all times within the scope of practice formulated by the relevant ETQA or ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learners must comply with baseline, periodic and exit examination criteria as applicable to the occupational setting.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for an audiometric screening test. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pre-test the audiometric equipment to ensure the required functionality and record calibrations for baseline comparison. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ensure a soundproof environment to prevent interference from outside noise which results in false-negative test results. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct an audiometric screening test on a patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The acoustic health history is obtained from the patient and, where indicated, an otoscopic examination is conducted to ensure the absence of any contraindications to screening such as current ear infections. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Health information such as, patient's rights, patient and worksite responsibilities, is proactively provided in terms of good clinical practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The equipment is demonstrated to the patient utilizing the threshold technique to ensure patient compliance and to minimise possible false results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Findings of the assessment are recorded and deviations are reported to the designated person for possible correction. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Interpret, evaluate, record and report the audiometric screening test results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The environmental survey results are recorded and the audiometric screening test results are explained to the patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Where necessary, referrals, with accompanying health to records, are made to hearing health care professionals for further treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Information regarding the application for compensation for noise induced hearing loss and occupational trauma of the ear is supplied where appropriate.

  • Assessors and moderators must be in possession of an equivalent or higher qualification that of the learner and must be experienced in the testing, evaluating, interpreting and recording of audiometric screening testing.
