PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in leading of physical activities in the context of outdoor education or development training or the context of sport development. Qualifying learners will be able to conduct planning within the context of an already outlined programme, prepare to lead the activity, prepare equipment, and clothing and take the necessary precautions to protect the environment.

Successful learners who will be able to prepare thoroughly prior to leading physical activities will contribute to the efficient, optimum and safe conduct of these activities. As a result the individual and organisation concerned, as well as the sub-field, will benefit.

    A style of leadership for the activity is chosen which is consistent with its aims and the profiles of the participants.

    Equipment is checked for serviceability and appropriateness before commencing the activity.

    Personal mastery of all necessary skills, demonstrations, support techniques and safety actions required to lead the activity effectively and safely, are confirmed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safe and suitable resources for the activity and the participants are prepared according to activity requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Participants are encouraged to be involved in setting up equipment, avoiding damage to the resources, thereby minimising any negative impact on the environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Unsafe and unserviceable resources, including equipment, are dealt with correctly to ensure participant safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Communication equipment is checked and tested in preparation for any activity planned. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Weather conditions are taken into account, as applicable from time to time, and information is continuously updated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Any necessary steps required to manage accidents or evacuations are implemented.
