PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand and apply the correct processes and procedures to the all service providers in the movement of freight. The learner will also be able to explain the importance of the different carriers in freight forwarding and implement the required procedures for the release of the cargo. The learner will also be able to carry out the required inspections allowance with the requirements of the relevant inspection authority.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining freight transport operations and ancillary service providers involved in the movement of freight.
  • Explaining the air freight transport operations and ancillary service providers involved in the international movement of freight.
  • Carrying out routine airfreight import procedures.
  • Carrying out routine airfreight export procedures.
  • Carrying out routine surface freight import procedures.
  • Carrying out routine surface freight export procedures.

    The importance of seafreight carriers with regard to world trade is explained in respect of Charter, Bulk, Full Container Load and Less than Container Load operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of road and rail freight is explained in the context of intermodal and overborder movements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The way in which cargo moves between transport modes through ports, harbours, terminals and depots is explained in the context of bulk, breakbulk and containerised cargo. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the air freight transport operations and ancillary service providers involved in the international movement of freight. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Air freight transport operations may include but are not limited to Airlines, airports and cargo handling facultie.

    The importance of airlines to world trade is explained in respect of straight and consolidated airfreight movements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The way in which cargo moves between transport modes through airports is explained in the context of straight consolidated and charter airfreight movements.

    Customs import release procedures are carried out according to Customs requirements.

    Consolidator release procedures are carried out in accordance with the relevant operator requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Airline release procedures are carried out for applicable cargo movement types in accordance with the relevant operator requirements.

    The consequences of not carrying out routine airfreight import procedures in accordance with Customs/carrier/operator requirements within timelines are explained with examples.

    Full Container Load carrier/merchant haulage release procedures are carried out for applicable cargo movement types in accordance with the relevant operator requirements.

    Depot import release procedures are carried out for Less than Container Load and groupage cargo in accordance with the relevant operator requirements.
