PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard will be able to engage in routine surface forwarding functions. They will be able to distinguish between the roles of the respective parties involved in the carriage of goods by sea and identify South Africa's major trade routes and evaluate and select sea freight carriers and their agents servicing South Africa's trading partners.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the criteria used to select a shipping service.
  • Interpreting liner sailing schedules.
  • Identifying the roles of the parties involved in the carriage of goods by sea. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will be assumed competent in:

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different types of shipping service are described in relation to cargo and shipper requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Shipping service may include but is not limited to tramp (wet and dry) and liner (general and containerised, conference and non-conference).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The contractual options available to ship cargo are described in terms of shipper and cargo requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Contractual options may include but are not limited to charter parties and liner service loyalty agreements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The criteria used to select a shipping service provider are described in terms of shipper and cargo requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Criteria may include but are not limited to equipment capabilities, frequency, port rotation and pricing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process used to appoint a shipping service provider is explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The shipping lines and their respective local agents serving South Africa's major trade routes are identified from the abbreviations used on sailing schedules. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Major trade routes may include but are not limited to United Kingdom, North West Continent, Mediterranean, Middle East, Far East, Australasia and United States of America.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The abbreviations of the ports of call served by liner services on South Africa's major trade routes are identified from the abbreviations used on sailing schedules. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Major trade routes may include but are not limited to United Kingdom, North West Continent, Mediterranean, Middle East, Far East, Australasia and United States of America.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The sailing frequency, port rotation and transit times of a shipping service are interpreted from information contained in sailing schedules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of misinterpreting information contained in shipping schedules are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify the roles of the parties involved in the carriage of goods by sea. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Parties includes but is not limited to shipowners, shipbrokers, forwarders, clearing agents, ships agents, marketing agents, owners' representatives, stevedores, longshoremen, terminal operators, and depot operators.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Requests from importers and exporters are analysed to identify the roleplayers involved. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Duties and responsibilities are described for identified roleplayers in specific transactions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of incorrectly identifying roleplayers and/or specifying their roles in specific transactions are described with examples.
