PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for processing seismograms (raw seismic data) in order to obtain seismic event location and other basic source parameters.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the nature of mining induced seismicity and its effects.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the necessity for seismic monitoring.
  • Demonstrate the ability to access and process seismic data and store seismic information.
  • Demonstrate the ability to distinguish poor from acceptable quality seismic data.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills and understanding of the interaction between rock strength, stress and fracturing in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    Seismic information on the seismic system is accessed and applied in terms of the mine specific monitoring system.

    Seismic raw data is processed, parameters calculated and the information stored in a database according to the mine specific monitoring system.

  • Rotate seismograms to facilitate picking.
  • Identify arrival time of P- and S-wave and place picks.
