PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to:
  • Write a scientific paper or seminar that is purposeful, factually correct and readable not necessarily for publication in a scientific journal.
  • Present a scientific paper/seminar that is purposeful, factually correct and readable that is consistent the standards of a scientific journal/professional society relevant to extension/development.
  • Write a technical brochure or manual suitable for use by extension/development practitioners with their clients.
  • Prepare and present a scientific poster that is purposeful, factually correct and readable.
  • Write a critique, editorial or rebuttal article presenting a well-argued defence of a scientific opinion.
  • Write a basic policy document within the scope of specialisation.

    It is assumed that learners attempting this unit standard will have the following knowledge and understanding in place:
  • The ability to identify and understand the purpose and function of the range of documents.
  • Understanding and applying the different writing styles for the range of documents.
  • The ability to choose which type of document is appropriate for which audience and task.
  • The ability to produce correctly the range of documents.
  • Know what is and be able to produce a presentable format for the range of documents.
  • Understand the effect of the appropriate/inappropriate choice of document.
  • Understand and apply citing and referencing systems appropriate to the different types of written communication.
  • Applied understanding of the role and place of written communication in extension/development.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A problem, topic or issue for scientific paper is chosen that is relevant to the work of the extension/development unit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A framework for the paper is determined in compliance with the guidelines of a recognised scientific journal publishing research relevant to extension/development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A literature review, discussion of findings from primary research and conclusions are developed in a manner consistent with scientific research standards and in compliance with the guidelines of a recognised scientific journal publishing research relevant to extension/development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Citing, referencing and style of writing are consistent with scientific research standards and in compliance with the guidelines of a recognised scientific journal publishing research relevant to extension/development. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Present a scientific paper/seminar that is purposeful, factually correct and readable that is consistent the standards of a scientific journal/professional society relevant to extension/development.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The audience/event for which the paper/seminar is intended is assessed to determine the most appropriate format for the presentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The problem, topic or issue of the presentation is chosen that is relevant to the work of the extension/development unit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A written version of the paper/seminar is developed in compliance with the guidelines of the event at which the paper/seminar is to be presented. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An audio-visual version of the paper/seminar is developed in a manner that is consistent with audience/event at which the paper/seminar is to be presented.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed, (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
