PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to people who are required to demonstrate knowledge and ability to work in a surface mine. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the requirements of he relevant aspects of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
  • Demonstrate understanding of emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of strata control.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of applicable ISO standards.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills and understanding of demonstrating knowledge and ability to work in surface mine in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable competent and informed workers.

    The objectives of Occupational Health and Safety are outlined in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act.

    The legal rights of the employee are outlined in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act.

    The legal rights of the employer are outlined in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The rights and powers of Health and Safety Representatives are explained in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Offences related to Occupational Health and Safety that can be committed by employers or employees are explained in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Explanation of offences must include the following:
  • Damage, misuse or interference in any way with health and safety equipment that is provided for use in the mine.
  • Negligent act or omission by one person that endangers the safety and health of another person at a mine.
  • A person hindering any other person who is performing a function in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
  • A person attempting to obtain any certificate of competency in a dishonest or fraudulent manner.
