PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to students who are engaged in community music making or who participate in music competitions. Students credited with this unit standard are able to write and perform exercises in staff notation, using a wide range of music from various South African cultures. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Communication at NQF Level 4.

It is assumed that learners have been involved in community music such as choirs or other musical activities. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The following scope and context apply to the whole unit standard:
  • Writing music in staff notation, performing exercises involving major and minor scales, African and jazz modes and metrical cycles, and identifying classics of South African music by ear and by reading a musical score.

    Perform music using staff notation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Sing or play from a score that employs signs and symbols for pitch, duration, and expression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Varied rhythmic patterns are presented through clapping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Melodic material in various major and minor keys, African modes, and jazz modes that can be utilized through singing and analysis are identified and utilized. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Musical knowledge is applied by making music come alive either with the 'inner ear' or with the help of an instrument. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Write music in staff notation for voices or keyboard.

    Notes, phrases, melodies, and rhythms are written. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Exercises are composed using simple rhythmic and melodic parameters.

    The principles of composition in a particular style are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Music from tonic solfa to staff notation and vice versa is described.

    Analyze compositions in staff notation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pitch, duration, scales, modes, keys, and rhythmic groupings are explained and analysed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The rhythmic and melodic parameters used in a composition are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Classic South African compositions are written. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Intervals, durations, and simple musical structure in both tonic solfa and staff notation are calculated.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
