PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will develop aural skills and apply conventional notation techniques. They will be able to listen, describe and notate a wide variety of music based on knowledge of pitch, rhythm and tone quality (timbre).

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Using music notation.
  • Listening to and notating music.
  • Identifying and differentiating between musical timbres in a musical excerpt.
  • Demonstrating aural and listening abilities by performing. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Use music notation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All intervals placed in an appropriate vocal range between perfect unison and a perfect 11th are identified and notated in staff notation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A non-modulating 8-bar melody in staff notation is sung or whistled from sight. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Note values includes, but is not limited to:
  • Quavers, crochets, minims and semibreves.

    Keys include, but is not limited to:
  • Major, minor and modes.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All triads and common quartads are notated in staff notation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Chords includes, but is not limited to:
  • Root positions and inversions in close structure.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Listen to and notate music.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A non-modulating 8-bar melody is notated in staff notation after a maximum of 4 repetitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An 8-bar rhythmic pattern is listened to and notated after a maximum of 4 repetitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diatonic triads and quartads in conventional harmonic progressions are identified and notated in staff notation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and differentiate between tone qualities in a musical excerpt. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Musical excerpts include, but is not limited to:

    Vocal and instrumental works of not less than 16 bars long.

    Texture is identified in accordance with established musical conventions.

    Individual instruments are identified according to established music practice.

    Combinations of instruments are identified according to established music practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Combinations may include, but are not limited to: string quartet, maskanda ensemble, jazz combo, timbila ensemble, brass band, tshikona ensemble and orchestras.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The instruments and ensembles are placed in historical, socio-cultural and other contexts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate aural and listening abilities by performing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All intervals between a perfect unison and a perfect 11th are played on an instrument of choice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An 8-bar melody is read at sight and performed from memory. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An 8-bar rhythmic pattern is clapped/tapped, not slower than 80 beats per minute. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Note values includes:
  • Values not smaller than semiquavers, including syncopated patterns.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Diatonic triads and quartads are played in conventional harmonic progressions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Quartads includes, but is not limited to:
  • Root positions and inversions in close structure.
     


  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.

  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with a relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors must be in possession of a Qualification in the field of Culture and Arts or the sub-field of Music at a minimum of NQF Level 6.
