The qualifying learner will be able to analyse music within a variety of narrow and broad contexts. This will provide a framework for the understanding of the role of music within its social, cultural, historical, political and economic contexts.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Differentiating between various types of world music.
  • Identifying and contextualising South African music of the twentieth century.
  • Contextualising music of the European art tradition.
  • Analysing various types of music in relation to their social, historical and economic contexts.

    Social uses of music in various cultures are explained in terms of similarities and differences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    World music styles are described in terms of their uses and stylistic characteristics with specific examples cited. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Representative styles are identified, described and contextualised on the basis of listening to specific examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and contextualise South African music of the twentieth century.

    Categories of South African music of the twentieth century are described and contextualised in terms of their historical origins and social uses.

    Representative examples of music from the European art tradition are identified, described and contextualised on the basis of listening.

    Analyse various types of music in relation to their social, historical and economic contexts.

    The influence of regional and world events on music and musical life is critically evaluated by means of specific case studies.

    The use of music to influence attitudes and actions is analysed in terms of social and political developments by means of case studies.

    The relationship between music and the economy is critically evaluated by means of case studies.

    The relationship between aesthetic stances and cultures is analysed in terms of musical expression. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the Specific Outcomes as well as the integrated competence described in this Unit Standard.
