PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the production and understanding of working piping drawings. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner's own context and experience of the world of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of piping drafting.
  • Identifying and drawing schematic drawings.
  • Identifying, describing and drawing isometric layouts and flow diagrams.

It also reflects the understanding of:
  • Pipe components and pipe systems.
  • The operation of the plant or engineering system where applicable.

This unit standard would be assessed in the context of:
  • A plant or engineering system within the workplace and a structured training environment.

The skills, knowledge and values reflected in this unit standard form part of the Exit Level Outcomes required for the National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Pipe-Fitting): NQF Level 4.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science at NQF Level 3:
  • Read, interpret and produce engineering drawing at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
    or
  • Read and interpret working piping drawings NQF Level 3.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Piping components will include reducers, tees, caps, couplings, plugs, swages, unions, elbows, flanges, valves, pumps and vessels.
  • Flow diagrams of systems will include process flow diagrams, mechanical flow diagrams, utility flow diagrams, mark numbers, flow arrow and line size dimensioning.
  • Pipes and pipelines include but are not limited to overhead, ground-level and underground types.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of pipe drafting.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Terminology as applicable to pipe drafting is explained and its uses described.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The history of conveying fluids, materials of construction, size, types of manufacturing of pipes and connections are explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Identify and draw schematic drawings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Piping components are identified and described in accordance with accepted definitions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Piping components are drawn and placed correctly in a drawing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A schematic view of piping layouts are drawn according to scale.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
An isometric drawing is drawn within agreed timeframes.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Identify, describe and draw isometric layouts and flow diagrams.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An ISO layout of pipe installations is drawn within agreed timeframes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Process, mechanical and utility flow diagrams are described and drawn.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Mark numbers, flow arrows, line size and dimensions are inserted into the drawing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Flow sheet symbols and diagrams are drawn for instrumentation within agreed time frames.

    Notes to Assessors:

Assessors should keep the following general principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember, we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessments at title level are unmanageable, focus the assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, directness, authenticity, sufficiency, openness and consistency.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
