PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The Unit standard is aimed at individuals utilising and maintaining vehicles or a range of vehicles in conservation areas. Learners will be able to handle vehicles safely according to National Traffic Regulations and according to manufacturers' specifications. He/she will be able to carry out a number of basic precautionary checks and carry out elementary repairs and maintenance. By completing this unit standard the qualifying learner will be a safer, more effective driver and the added driving skills will make them more employable in a wide range of applications.

In particular, the qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Exhibit skills for the safe operation of vehicles.
  • Exhibit competence in the towing of trailers, operation of auxiliary equipment and recovery vehicles.
  • Carry out pre-driving maintenance checks.
  • Carry out basic routine maintenance tasks.
  • Inspect and report more serious faults to the appropriate person.

    Exhibit skills for the safe operation of vehicles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The order of operation of the controls of the vehicle is correctly used when starting and stopping the vehicle (including parking the vehicle). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The vehicle is correctly handled whilst driving through the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The necessary consideration and courtesy is extended to other road users within the area of operation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Exhibit competence in the towing of trailers, operation of auxiliary equipment and recovery vehicles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Trailers and broken-down (or stuck) vehicles are hitched, towed and unhitched safely and competently in accordance with organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Auxiliary equipment is operated in accordance with organizational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Trailers, hi-up cranes, slashers, chippers, mowers, fence post anchors, power take-offs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Recovery vehicles are operated in accordance with organizational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Carry out pre-driving maintenance checks and routine maintenance tasks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate maintenance checks are carried out before embarking on a journey. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fuel and coolant levels, tyre condition, serviceability of lights, flickers and wipers and K53 factors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Routine maintenance tasks are carried out to ensure serviceability of vehicles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Change oil and fuel filters; replace electrical fuses, replace fused bulbs, replace damaged lights and lenses, repair punctures, replace tyres, add fuel, water and oil when required.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Inspect and report any more extensive faults to appropriate person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Inspections are carried out and serious mechanical faults are identified as they arise. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Serious mechanical faults are reported to the appropriate person (that is, the workshop or fleet manager). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Organisational prescriptions are followed when identifying and reporting repair needs. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • Use of auxiliary equipment: 4 x 4, tractors and heavy vehicles.
  • Basic repairs: Lights/reflectors, fuses, wheel change, punctures.
  • Basic maintenance: Oil change, filter changes, bleeding, diesel vehicle, tyre rotation.
  • Reporting and record keeping: Consumption, major repairs.
  • Accident procedures.
  • Radio procedures.
  • Emergency procedures: First aid, medi-vac etc.
