PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner assessed as competent against this unit standard will develop a personal set of values and ethics around controversial conservation and environmental issues and is able to identify values underpinning such controversies. This unit standard enhances empathetic understanding of underlying currents and trends in conservation and seeks to address conflict.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Identify values, situations and behaviour which have caused global environmental crises, and which can be addressed at local level.
  • Explain differing interests and values underlying local environmental issues.
  • Develop a personal set of extrinsic and intrinsic values of ecosystems, including their bio-cultural components.
  • Distinguish differing interests and values underlying current practices in conservation.
  • Interact with people to address conservation issues of a bioregional context.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

The utilisation of plants and animals for medicinal and other purposes in harmony with conservation principles are outlines as it applies to the local environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Ways in which the aesthetic appeal of conservation areas can be maintained is identified as it applies to the operational environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The types, magnitude and frequency of environmental problems; which have caused global crises and are addressed at local level, are identified as it applies to the operational environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The influence of man on the environment is identified and described as it applies to ethical behaviour in conservation environments.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Littering, utilisation of resources including land, etc.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Explain differing interests and values underlying local environmental conflict issues.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Conflict between the interests of private ownership with local conservation practice is outlined and identified.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Ways on how the values and interests of communal ownership can impact on the environment are identified and explored.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Ethical considerations are outlined as profit making is weighed up against conservation imperatives.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Develop a personal set of extrinsic and intrinsic values relating to ecosystems, including their bio-cultural components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The meaning of ethics and its implications in the conservation context is explained.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Include littering; responsible use of water, electricity and other natural resources.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A personal local action/commitment list is compiled outlining the extrinsic and intrinsic values relating to ecosystems.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Include their bio-cultural components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A list is drawn up in consultation with local inhabitants to identify local environmental problems or issues that may cause conflict in a bioregional context.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Distinguish differing interests and values underlying current practices in conservation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A distinction is made between "preservationist" and "conservationist" with a view to understanding current practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
An overview is given of ecosystems and the differing interests and values that prompt present practice.
