PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the field of law enforcement who will be able to demonstrate understanding of the vehicle impoundment processes with special references to the vehicle-safeguarding environment. They will be able to identify the types of vehicles for impoundment as well as their identification, examination, investigation and disposal processes of these impounded vehicles.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Examine vehicles within the vehicle safeguarding premises.
  • Assess the investigation process regarding impounded vehicles.

    The roles and functions of the "investigation team" is explained in relation to the categories of impounded vehicles.

    The purpose of documentation is described in terms of its evidential value during the vehicle investigation process.

    Documentation may refer to but are not limited to vehicle seizure statements, vehicle safeguarding files, statements and photographs and must include the completion of documentation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The recognition process used to identify vehicles are explained in order to ensure its correct disposal of the vehicle. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Recognition process must refer to but is not limited to the contacting of stakeholders, the physical recognition and confirmation of recognition of an identified vehicle.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The disposal process of identified vehicles is explained in relation to the handing over of vehicles to the lawful possessor or owner. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Disposal process must refer to but is not limited to updating of systems, informing station of origin, inspections and closing of case files/dockets.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The legal prescripts regarding the disposal of vehicles are identified in terms of sections of the current Criminal Procedure Act.

    The purpose of documentation is described in terms of its evidential value during the vehicle disposal process.

    Documentation may refer to but are not limited to vehicle seizure statements, vehicle safeguarding files, statements and photographs and must include the completion of documentation.

    Ways of dealing with vehicles, which are disposed of, are identified in line with legal prescripts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ways of dealing may refer to but is not limited to handing over to lawful possessor or owner, representative, disposal order by court, forfeiting to the State, for Police use and destroying (compacting).
