PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who manage, deal and handle suspects in the investigation of an alleged crime or incident. This unit standard will enable learners to locate suspects and conduct identification parades to link suspects to the incident or crime. They will be able to conduct interviews and charge or release suspects.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Trace suspects.
  • Conduct an identification parade.
  • Apply interviewing skills.
  • Apply the process of charging or releasing a suspect.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tracing techniques are described in order to make an informed decision on which tracing techniques should be used in specific cases. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons for gathering details of suspects are explained in order to individualize the suspect to the incident or crime. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individualization refers to but is not limited to the use of fingerprints, witness statements, profiles of suspects, DNA, use of informers and victims descriptions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A suspect is located by applying tracing techniques within a structured scenario.

    Conduct an identification parade.

    The term "identification parade" is explained in terms of the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act. Types of identification parades are described in terms of their purpose.

    Legal prescripts regarding identification parades are evaluated in terms of their possible evidential value. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Resources and aids needed in an identification parade are explained in terms of their purpose.

    Role-players in relation to an identification parade is described in terms of their functions and purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The order of processes to be followed in an identification parade is listed in line with organizational prescripts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The importance of recording the identification parade is evaluated in terms of its possible evidential value. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Recording refers to the taking of notes, video recordings, completion of prescribed documentation and the value of record keeping in ensuring the admissibility thereof.

    The role of statements during the interview is assessed in terms of its evidential value.

    Confessions are distinguished from admissions in line with their intended purpose.

    The role of the suspect's versions and alibi's are independently verified in line with gathered information.

    It is important for obtaining this unit standard that a structured scenario must be given to the learner regarding questioning and interviewing.

    The role of the investigating officer is assessed in relation to charging and releasing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The rights of a suspect are evaluated in terms of the Constitution of South Africa. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role and function of record keeping is described in line with charging and releasing processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process in charging and releasing a suspect is evaluated in terms of the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual who wishes to be assessed against this unit standard (including assessment of RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. Assessors must be competent in the outcome of the Unit Standard.
