PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms a part of the core of the qualification, National Certificate in Water and Waste Water Reticulation Services. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for development within the water reticulation sector.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and describing backfill materials and compaction.
  • Preparing for compacting operations.
  • Accepting and placing materials.
  • Assisting with compaction of materials. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in communicating verbally and in writing at Level 1 on the NQF or equivalent. There is open access to this unit standard.

    Identify and describe backfill materials and compaction equipment.

    Demonstrate knowledge of backfilling materials.

    Identifies and describes types of aggregates, durability, grade, and cleanliness.

    Compaction equipment are described in accordance with job requirements.

    Prepare for compacting operations.

    Material is placed in layers for compacting in accordance with specifications and job requirements.
