PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to operate mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic tools and equipment in a safe manner and in compliance with legislation. This knowledge and skill will enable the learner to work in a competent manner, which will contribute towards the overall efficiency and. The attained competence will also enable the learner to understand the use, care and do the basic maintenance of this equipment. This will ensure that breakages and stoppages are kept to a minimum and equipment is used in accordance with safe work practices thus increasing the safety standards of the organisation. This competence will advance the learner's own expertise, progression and employability in both the water and wastewater sector and other related jobs. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.
  • Apply personal safety practices in the water sector at NQF Level 2.

    Electrical tools:
  • Angle grinder, electric drill, and submersible water pump, electrical hoist, extension cords.

    Pneumatic tools:
  • Compressor, jackhammer, angle grinders, spanners, drills, and compactors.

    Hydraulic equipment:
  • Hydraulic lifting and moving gear.

    Safety equipment:
  • Gloves, goggles, overalls, safety boots, mask, earplugs, helmet, reflector vest.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
