PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to demonstrate competence in the following outcomes:
  • Identify and explain different pipe sizes, classes and types.
  • Identify and explain the specifications of associated fittings in reticulation systems.
  • Identify and explain the types and functions of valves used on reticulation systems.
  • Explain and demonstrate the preventative maintenance procedures for valves.
  • Correctly identify and explain the type of meters used in different reticulation systems.
  • Explain and demonstrate storage and handling procedures for pipes associated fittings, valves and meters.

    This competence will provide the learner with the foundational knowledge and skills required to be able to operate effectively when performing maintenance or construction tasks on a water and/or wastewater reticulation system. In acquiring this competence the qualifying learner will lay a good foundation for future learning and action, and better understand the broader context of own work. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:

  • Pipes: High density Polyethelene (HDPE), Poly Vinal Chloride, mild steel, galvanised iron, copper, concrete, Clay, Glass fiber Reinforced Plastic(GRP), Polypropylene, fibre cement.
  • Class of Pipes and fiitings: Pressure rating.
  • Corrosion Protection: Fusion bonded epoxy, Paints, cement mortar lining, High Density Polyethylene Lining, Bitumen.
  • Pipe ends: Flanged, plain, threaded, spigot, socket ended.
  • Measuring devices: Steel ruler, tape, and vernier callipers.
  • Measurements: Inside diameter, outside diameter, length, wall thickness, ovality.
  • Valves: Ball, gate, needle, diaphragm, globe, butterfly, stop cock, non-return valves.
  • Actuators: Pneumatic, electrical.
  • Fittings: Couplings, T pieces, unions, elbows and bends, stop ends, flanges, saddles, reducers.
  • Flanges: Sizes, drilling tables.
  • Control valves: Pressure control valves, level control valve, air-relief valves, flow control valve, pressure relief valves, pressure reducing valves, back-flow preventers.
  • Meters: Combination meter, spiral, turbine, electro-magnetic, venturi flume, piston meter.

    All materials used would conform to relevant SABS/SANS standards.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.     UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
    This unit standard replaces unit standard 12337, "Demonstrate knowledge of pipes associated fittings valves and meters used in water reticulation systems", Level 2, 10 credits.

    Integrated Assessment:

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
