PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard in combination with other content-related standards will be able to explain the meaning of public relations and its importance to sport recreation and fitness. The learner is able to identify and explain the main elements of public relations, the various public relations media and how they could be used to support the team. Furthermore, the learner will be able to deal effectively with the media.

Competent learners will provide the environment for quality experiences to participants and thus strengthen the profession in general.

In particular, on completion of this unit standard, the learner is able to:
  • Explain the meaning of public relations.
  • Identify the various public relations media and prepare for media appearance.
  • Describe protocols and etiquette of the sport or the organisation that would be appropriate for media appearances or presentations.
  • Deal effectively with the media.

    In addition they will be well positioned to extend their learning and practice into other areas of Sport or Fitness disciplines, or to strive towards professional standards and practices at higher levels.

    The benefits of public relations are assessed respecting the promotion of sport in the media.

    A list of personnel who are authorised to speak to the media is complied so as to deal effectively with the media.

    A list of what is appropriate and inappropriate for media communication is compiled in preparation of meeting with the media together with appropriate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An appropriate time to communicate to the media is selected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Sponsors are appropriately acknowledged in the media release. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The duration of the media meeting is carefully managed to ensure that prescribed time frames are adhered to.
