PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for installing survey points in any underground environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of surveying terminology.
  • Prepare to install survey point.
  • Position and install survey point.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Competency in numeracy and literacy skills equivalent to NQF Level 1.
  • Unit standard "Attend to a survey point in an underground environment", NLRD 9760.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is intended to cover the installation of survey points in an underground environment as opposed to the typical surface survey point installation. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of surveying terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic principles associated with surveying are explained with reference to the types of survey points, allaying of dust and equipment to be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Procedures for installing survey points are accurately described and terminology correctly listed in terms of operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of installing survey points is explained with reference to the impact of poor installation on surveying and health and safety during excavation operations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to install survey point. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools and equipment are appropriate to the task, clean and operational in accordance with work instructions and specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is appropriate to the conditions; operational and used in accordance with its design, documented best practice and legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedure for gaining permission to enter the workplace is consistent with specified requirements and legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Workplace examination identifies all hazardous and sub-standard conditions. The response and/or corrective action is appropriate to the situation and complies with the specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not adhering to the proper preparation are explained with reference to health and safety and loss of production. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Position and install survey point.

    Work related hazards and associated risks are explained, and if found, dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.

    The consequences of hazards and risks are explained with reference to health and safety and loss of production.

    Marking-off of survey point positions are established in accordance with operational requirements.

    Survey points are installed and marked in compliance with legal and operational requirements.

    The explanation of the conditions must include reference to:

    The consequences of non-compliance and their effect on the evaluation result are explained.

    Tools and equipment are collected and stored in preparation for leaving the workplace and defective tools and equipment dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
