PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible to prepare borehole core for logging and sampling purposes from core containers.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate the knowledge required to correctly prepare (handle and lay out) borehole core.
  • Prepare to lay out the borehole core.

    Demonstrate the knowledge required to prepare (handle and lay out) borehole core correctly in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The accepted principles for laying out borehole core are explained in terms of operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The contents and requirements of the work instruction and the consequences of non-compliance with the requirements are described in terms of the potential effect on the logging and sampling procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of laying out the borehole core in accordance with the accepted geological principles and procedures is described to obtain accurate geological information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles are described to correctly measure true core losses and the correction for core gains in terms of specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The Occupational health and safety measures are described when working with chemicals during the washing and cleaning of contaminated core in accordance with the current legislation.

    Permission to enter the workplace, when required, is obtained in accordance with laid down procedures.

    Personal protective equipment is selected and examined for any defects and used in accordance with legal and laid down procedures.

    Defective personal protective equipment is dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The tools, materials and equipment required for laying out the borehole core are selected, examined and verified in accordance with the work instruction received. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Defective tools, materials and equipment are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Potential and actual hazardous and sub-standard conditions found during the examination of the workplace are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include any one or a combination of the following:
  • Slippery surfaces.
  • Electricity in close proximity to water.
  • Poor illumination.
  • Sharp edges (trays, boxes).

    The appropriate core trays are selected to accommodate the core size and cleaned, when necessary, in accordance with laid down procedure.

    The relevant core boxes/containers pertaining to the borehole are identified and placed in a sequential order by employing safe lifting procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The borehole details are determined, verified and recorded, all in accordance with the work instruction received.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Work related hazards and associated risks that have an effect on a safe and healthy work environment are dealt with in accordance with laid down procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include any one or a combination of the following:
  • Eye/facial injuries.
  • Hand and foot injuries.
  • Incorrect lifting procedures and back injuries.
  • Chemical burns.
  • Inhalation of noxious and toxic gases.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The borehole core is correctly laid out and fitted in accordance with accepted geological standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The borehole core is washed, cleaned and dried, using the approved cleansing liquids and materials, when required and in a safe and healthy manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Anomalous conditions are noted and deviations from the accepted lay out procedure are accurately recorded and reported. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include:
  • Adjusting the core depth for apparent core losses.
  • Adjusting the core depth for apparent core gains.
  • Unmarked progress depth.
  • Adjusting the position and orientation of misplaced core, when identified.
  • Core contaminated with drilling fluids.

    The tools, materials and equipment required for the layout procedure are correctly used in accordance with the work instruction.

    The tools, materials and equipment are cleaned and ensured to be ready for future use in accordance with the laid down procedure.

    The cleaning, labelling and storage of the used core boxes/containers are in accordance with the laid down procedure.

    The workplace is cleaned to comply with documented and recognised good housekeeping practices.

    The necessary report(s) are compiled in the required format and submitted to the relevant personnel and existing reports filed.
