PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at learners in the audio-visual production industry who are responsible for rigging and de-rigging lighting. Credited learners are able to set up lighting safely, and according to given specifications to ensure equipment care.

People credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Prepare for rigging.
  • Rig lights.
  • De-rig lights. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit value is based on the assumption that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are already competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Computer literate at NQF Level 4.
  • Driving a vehicle. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard will be useful to people who work in the audio-visual production industry and are responsible for rigging and de-rigging video cameras.

    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Television studios and outside broadcasts.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment is selected according to production requirements and supplied instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Where equipment needs to be ordered, the enterprise procedure is followed using the correct forms and completing all required information accurately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of using incorrect procedures for hiring of equipment are described in terms of the potential legal repercussions for the production and the hiring company. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment matches the inventory for accuracy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Faulty or non-operational equipment, if any, is identified, tested and replaced in accordance with the enterprise practise before it is needed for the production`s set-up deadline.

    Safety aspects are maintained during the preparation and testing of the equipment.

    Equipment is marked clearly, stored safely and is available for use according to the deadlines set by the production schedule.

    Contingency plans are established to cater for the event of equipment malfunction and back-up equipment is ensured to be available and in good working condition.

    Lighting equipment is set up and adjusted to the lighting designer`s requirements and instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements can be set for sets, cameras, talent, lighting effects, etc. and include angles, distances types of lamps, accessories, light intensity and contrast ratios, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lamps and accessories are set up safely in accordance with health and safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Waterproofing of cables, health and safety regulations.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Colour correction, colour effects and lighting corrections meet the production requirements, filters are cut to the correct size and the correct colour frames are used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment is rigged so that they are safe for the public and crew, are neat and secure for the duration of the production. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    In adverse weather conditions and at heights.

    Where scaffolding is used, it is legal, secure and safe.

    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance.     This unit standard replaces unit standard 12507, "Rig lighting for locations", Level 5, 8 credits.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgments should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.

    < The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
