PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for individuals involved in or contemplating involvement in a voluntary capacity in a community, organisation or workplace and who is required to clarify the concept of volunteerism and to understand the contribution, the responsibilities and the advantages of volunteerism as it applies to the South African environment.

Individuals found competent against this unit standard will be responsible for applying the principles of volunteering within a selected area of operation and will in particular be capable of:
  • Investigating and clarifying the concept of volunteerism.
  • Clarifying expectations relating to volunteerism.
  • Determining opportunities for involvement in volunteerism.

    The principles of volunteerism are investigated and clarified as they apply to the South African environment.

    The potential contribution of volunteerism from an economic and social perspective is investigated within the context of participative involvement and nation building. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The need, advantages and motives for volunteerism are investigated and clarified from a general and personal perspective.

    Clarify expectations relating to volunteerism.

    The roles and functions of volunteers is clarified as they apply to volunteering in general.

    Organisational expectations are clarified relating to the use of volunteers.

    Commitment expectations, time, accountability, contribution within the context of skills and competency levels, accountability, acting as an ambassador of the organisation or institution, ethical conduct.

    Individual expectations are clarified with regard to volunteering.

    Role and function, opportunities, rights of the volunteer, organisational ethics, training and orientation, contractual agreements.

    Determine opportunities for involvement in volunteerism.

    The sectors where opportunities for volunteerism exist are determined as to assess opportunities for the individual.

    Personal interest, competencies or need for practical experience.

    The specific areas of contribution of volunteers are determined for a selected environment.

    Specific opportunities for involvement in voluntary capacity are investigated and application requirements and criteria identified.

    Orientation, training and induction requirements are investigated and determined as it applies to the selected area of participation. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements. Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
