PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand track standards in relation to the class of line and interpret reports to determine any further action which may need to be taken. Learners will also be able to actions required for deviations according to set parameters. Learners will also be in a position to understand the actions required to deal with any and all deviations and what resources and measures are required to deal effectively and efficiently with each deviation.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the terminology of track geometry reports.
  • Assessing track conditions from reports in order to determine the extent and location of immediate priorities.
  • Locating immediate priority/ies on track.
  • Determining the resource requirements to rectify deviations.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology of track geometry reports. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The layout of a strip chart is described in terms of headings and events. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The parameters on a strip chart are identified and described in accordance with industry specific definitions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parameters may include but are not limited to vertical alignment, twist, super elevation, gauge, horizontal alignment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The scaling of the data on a strip chart is applied in order to determine the magnitude and location of the deviation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Track standards are explained in accordance with laid down specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Track standards may include but are not limited to parameters, thresholds, fixed points, and vehicle structure gauge.

    Assess track conditions from reports in order to determine the extent and location of immediate priorities.

    Locate immediate priority/ies on track.

    The methods of locating immediate priorities on track are described by using strip chart features. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The physical location of the deviation is pointed out in a given scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The magnitude of the deviation is determined by using standard measurement procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The cause of the deviation is determined in order to establish possible resource requirements.

    Determine the resource requirements to rectify deviations.

    Resource requirements may include but are not limited to labour, material, cost machines, and equipment.

    Time frames of the repairs are explained in terms of different types of repair.

    Role-players are communicated with regarding the actions being taken to rectify deviations.
