PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, knowledge and values required to prepare tyre casings for retreading. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Inspect tyres and determine their suitability for retreading.
  • Use tools and materials and operate equipment safely and effectively to perform a range of tasks required to prepare tyres for retreading.
  • Identify problems while working and take corrective action.
  • Apply knowledge of tyre types and properties and their specific retreading requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of tyre injuries and their specific repair requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of applicable safety requirements, worksite procedures and company standards and their application.

    This unit standard may be assessed in the context of:
  • Passenger tyres.
  • Light and heavy commercial vehicle tyres.
  • Agricultural machine/equipment tyres.
  • Industrial machine/equipment tyres.
  • Off-the-road (OTR) tyres. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare workstation for work activity and check condition of materials, tools and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The relevant checklist is used to confirm that all materials, tools, equipment and accessories required are at the workstation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Materials and tools required includes but is not limited to hand and power tools, measuring equipment, cleaning materials, lifting equipment, stippling brushes, wire brushes, stitchers, marking materials.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Condition of repair materials, tools and equipment is checked for conformance with manufacturers' specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All applicable safety equipment required for activity at workstation is available and confirmed to be in good condition. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Carry out initial inspection of tyre and identify and mark damage, wear and faults.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Job card is read and requirements are determined with reference to marked tyre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tyre is confirmed as suitable or not suitable for the retreading process in accordance with applicable refurbishing standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    'Applicable refurbishing standards' refers to SABS standards, manufacturer's standards, company standards and/or international standards for repairing and retreading tyres.

    Tools and equipment are selected and used in accordance with the requirements of the task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Damage, wear and faults are marked in accordance with company and/or manufacturer's requirements.

    To establish competence the learner must be assessed on a range of tyres and types of damage, wear and faults.

    All foreign objects are removed and their location marked in accordance with company and/or manufacturer's requirements.

    Inspection is performed safely in accordance with company procedures.

    Concepts and principles relevant to inspecting and selecting tyres for retreading are described and explained.

  • Reasons for rejecting or accepting tyres for repairing/retreading.

    Tyre is inflated in accordance with buffing machine manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The buffing machine is set in accordance with tyre specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The buffing machine is operated in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The buffed tyre meets quality requirements in terms of company and/or manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
  • 'Quality requirements' refer to radii, depth of remaining rubber and buffing texture.
  • To establish competence the learner must be assessed on a range of tyres. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All work is performed in accordance with relevant safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The principles which underpin the buffing process are described and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The learner is able to respond to 'what', 'what if' and 'why' questions related to:
  • Setting and operating the buffing machine.
  • The effect of tyre size and type on buffing specifications.

    Identify and prepare imperfections and damaged areas for repair.

    Tyre injuries are identified and assessed in accordance with the relevant repair chart. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
  • 'Tyre injury' refers to damage to a tyre resulting from an external cause.
  • To establish competence the learner must be assessed on a range of tyres and types of injuries. 
  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    'Assessing' includes probing to determine extent of tyre injury.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tyre injuries are skived and cleaned according to specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Skiving equipment and accessories are used in accordance with task requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The amount of material removed during skiving operations is in accordance with company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Where applicable 'material' includes rubber, steel cord or fabric.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All safety standards are strictly adhered to during skiving operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Safe work practices applied while skiving are described and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The learner is able to respond to 'what', 'what if' and 'why' questions related to:
  • Hazards associated with the task.
  • Selection and use of personal protective equipment.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Identify repair requirements and perform repairs.

    The learner is required to perform spot and sectional reinforced repairs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Repair requirements are identified in accordance with tyre type, repair manufacturer's charts and company procedure manuals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    To establish competence the learner must be assessed on a range of repairs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Repair material is selected according to repair chart information and type of tyre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Repairs are performed in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Concepts and principles related to carrying out repairs are described and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The learner is able to respond to 'what', 'what if' and 'why' questions related to:
  • The reasons why one type of repair or another is required (e.g. cross ply versus radial construction, the size and depth of injury).
  • Quality requirements for tyre repair.
  • Risks and hazards related to working with compressed air.
  • Why relevant safe working practices must be applied.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Apply cement to buffed and cleaned surfaces.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Vulcanising cement is applied to prepared areas and allowed to dry in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The skived areas are filled in accordance with procedure manual specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cemented tyres are handled in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The cemented surface is not exposed for longer than time period specified by manufacturer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tools, equipment, accessories and materials are selected according to task requirements and used in accordance with procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Relevant safe work practices are applied. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7 
    Apply quality checks on completed uncured casing and complete work operations.

  • Benefits and consequences of selecting appropriate tools for various operations and adjustments.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Information on work done is recorded in accordance with company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tools, equipment, accessories and unused materials are stored in accordance with company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A clean and tidy workstation is maintained and all waste and scrap is disposed of in accordance with company procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The integrated assessment should be based on a summative assessment guide. The guide will specify how the assessor will assess different aspects of the performance and will include:
    > Evaluating evidence in a portfolio of evidence, particularly projects which integrate various aspects of the unit standard and which demonstrate the integration of knowledge, skills and values, and the development of the critical outcomes.
    > Observing and listening to the learner at work, both in primary activities as well as in other interactions, or in relevant simulations.

  • Assessment of competence for this unit standard is based on experience acquired by the learner in the workplace, within the particular tyre retreading context. The assessment process should cover the explicit tasks required for the unit standard as well as the understanding of the concepts and principles that underpin the process.
  • The assessment process should also establish how the learning process has advanced the Critical Cross-field Outcomes.
  • The learner may choose in which language he/she wants to be assessed. This should be established as part of a process of preparing the learner for assessment and familiarising the learner with the approach being taken.
  • Assessors should also evaluate evidence that the learner has been performing consistently over a period of time.
  • The assessment for this unit standard can be done in conjunction with assessment for other unit standards related to a qualification, and in conjunction with the assessment for the qualification as a whole.
