PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, knowledge and values required to cure retreaded and repaired tyres. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Operate equipment safely and effectively.
  • Perform a range of tasks related to curing.
  • Identify problems while working and take corrective action.
  • Apply knowledge of curing requirements for tread rubber and repair materials when performing tasks related to curing.

    This unit standard may be assessed in the context of either the hot or the precure retread process. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following competencies are assumed:

  • Mathematical Literacy, NQF Level 1.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for work activity and check processed casing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The relevant checklist is used to confirm that all materials, tools and equipment required are at the workstation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Condition of materials, tools and equipment is checked for conformance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The processed casing is checked for defects that would preclude curing and appropriate steps are taken in accordance with company procedures if required. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare equipment and tyre for curing process. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    For the precure process, this includes:
  • Fitting an envelope and/or curing tube of appropriate size on the tyre.
  • Selecting the sealing assembly in which to mount the enveloped tyre according to tyre selection chart.
  • Locking the sealing assembly securely into position.

    For the hot process, this includes selecting the mould with relevant size and tread pattern.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Operations to prepare tyre for curing are carried out in accordance with company and/or manufacturers' procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment is used in accordance with the requirements of the task and without causing damage to tyres or equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safe work practices are observed throughout the process when handling tyres and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Concepts and principles relevant to preparing for the curing process are described and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The learner is able to respond to 'what', 'what if' and 'why' questions related to:
  • Contaminated or poorly prepared tyres.
  • Poorly prepared equipment (eg mould/envelope).
  • Safe and unsafe work practices.
  • Working with compressed air.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Load prepared tyre and initiate the curing process. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • For the precure process the curing cycle will take place in a pressurised chamber.
  • For the hot process the curing cycle will take place in a mould.

    Complete curing process and unload tyre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Curing cycle is completed according to specifications set by pressurised chamber/mould manufacturer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cured tyre is unloaded from curing equipment in accordance with procedures set by pressurised chamber/mould manufacturer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Any non-conformances are identified and reported according to company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All work is performed safely. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Perform final inspection and trimming of tyre and complete the work process.

    Tyre is inspected for faults/defects according to company quality requirements.

    Tyre is trimmed of excess rubber in accordance with company procedures.

    Any non-conformances are identified and reported accurately to appropriate personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Causes of routine faults are identified and action is taken in accordance with company procedures.

    Factors affecting the quality of the cured tyre are described and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The learner is able to respond to 'what', 'what if' and 'why' questions related to:
  • Typical routine faults/non-conformances that can occur during curing and their causes.
  • The learner's own role in ensuring the quality of the curing process.
  • Knowing when rectifying of faults is within own scope and when assistance is required.
  • The implications of delays or poorly executed work.

    Tools and equipment are checked, cleaned and stored in accordance with company standards and good housekeeping is maintained in the work area.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The integrated assessment should be based on a summative assessment guide. The guide will specify how the assessor will assess different aspects of the performance and will include:
    > Evaluating evidence in a portfolio of evidence, particularly projects which integrate various aspects of the unit standard and which demonstrate the integration of knowledge, skills and values, and the development of the critical outcomes.
    > Observing and listening to the learner at work, both in primary activities as well as in other interactions, or in relevant simulations.

  • Assessment of competence for this unit standard is based on experience acquired by the learner in the workplace, within the particular tyre retreading context. The assessment process should cover the explicit tasks required for the unit standard as well as the understanding of the concepts and principles that underpin the process.
  • The assessment process should also establish how the learning process has advanced the Critical Cross-field Outcomes.
  • The learner may choose in which language he/she wants to be assessed. This should be established as part of a process of preparing the learner for assessment and familiarising the learner with the approach being taken.
  • Assessors should also evaluate evidence that the learner has been performing consistently over a period of time.
  • The assessment for this unit standard can be done in conjunction with assessment for other unit standards related to a qualification, and in conjunction with the assessment for the qualification as a whole.
