PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, knowledge and values required to repair off-the-road (OTR) tyres. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Assess condition of OTR tyres.
  • Determine repair requirements and perform repairs on OTR tyres.
  • Apply knowledge of typical OTR tyre injuries and how to repair them.
  • Apply knowledge of factors which determine the viability of the repair. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following competencies are assumed:
  • Communication, NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy, NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Off-the-road (OTR) machines/equipment includes but is not limited to military applications, cranes, earthmoving equipment and mining equipment.
  • Tyre types include tubeless, tubed type, crossply and radial.
  • The individual will work as a member of a team throughout the process of securing, inspecting and repairing OTR tyres.
  • The learner is not required to operate specialised tyre handling machines.
  • Further information on the scope and level of this unit standard is indicated by range statements related to the specific outcomes or assessment criteria. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Inspect tyre and indicate internal and external injuries. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    'Tyre injury' refers to damage to a tyre resulting from an external cause. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All visible injuries are identified and marked in accordance with company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Visible injuries include but are not limited to bead damage, sidewall damage, crown damage, cracks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools required to carry out the inspection of the tyre are selected according to task requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The tyre is placed in a secure position in accordance with company requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Where applicable this criterion will include giving relevant instructions to the operator of the tyre handling equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Job card is completed in accordance with company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Concepts and principles related to tyre inspection are described and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The learner is able to describe and explain:
  • Typical tyre injuries and their causes.
  • Why the tyre must be stable and methods of securing the tyre.
  • How to assess the overall condition of the tyre.
  • Reasons why tyres are suitable or not suitable for repair.
  • Action to be taken if the tyre cannot be repaired.

    Determine repair requirements and select repair material. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant tools, equipment and accessories are selected and used in accordance with task requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Injured area is skived and opened to expose the extent of damage, without exceeding the specifications for the relevant tyre size. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Measuring tools are used correctly to obtain accurate measurements of length, breadth and depth of injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Repair material (repair unit) is selected in accordance with the measurements taken of the injury and the manufacturer's repair chart. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Curing time is calculated according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Carry out repair. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The learner is required to demonstrate the ability to carry out minor, cosmetic and major repairs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tyre is repaired in accordance with repair manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Applicable safe working practices are applied during the repair process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, accessories and equipment are selected according to task requirements and used in accordance with company procedures to perform repairs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tube and valve repairs are carried out in accordance with repair manufacturer's specifications.

    Repaired tyre is inspected for completeness and quality of repair. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools, accessories and equipment are cleaned and stored, and unused repair materials are stored, in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Documentation and/or reporting requirements are completed in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All relevant housekeeping tasks are performed. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The integrated assessment should be based on a summative assessment guide. The guide will specify how the assessor will assess different aspects of the performance and will include:
    > Evaluating evidence in a portfolio of evidence, particularly projects which integrate various aspects of the unit standard and which demonstrate the integration of knowledge, skills and values, and the development of the critical outcomes.
    > Observing and listening to the learner at work, both in primary activities as well as in other interactions, or in relevant simulations.
    > Asking questions and initiating short discussions to test understanding and to verify other evidence.
    > Looking at records and reports.
    > Formative assessment.
  • Assessment of competence for this unit standard is based on experience acquired by the learner in the workplace, within the particular tyre context. The assessment process should cover the explicit tasks required for the unit standard as well as the understanding of the concepts and principles that underpin the process.
  • The assessment process should also establish how the learning process has advanced the Critical Cross-field Outcomes.
  • The learner may choose in which language he/she wants to be assessed. This should be established as part of a process of preparing the learner for assessment and familiarising the learner with the approach being taken.
  • Assessors should also evaluate evidence that the learner has been performing consistently over a period of time.
  • The assessment for this unit standard can be done in conjunction with assessment for other unit standards related to a qualification, and in conjunction with the assessment for the qualification as a whole.
