PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is designed for individuals who are working in a distribution environment according to the scope of practice regulations. It enables pharmacist's assistants to issue specified scheduled medicines or substances from a prescription or order and supply it to the authorised practitioner or pharmacist under the supervision of a pharmacist. The importance of accurate recording and documentation is also explained. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that the learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The prescription or order is checked to ensure that it has been placed by an authorised person and meets all legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Deviations relating to prescription and/or order referred to the pharmacist for instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Authorisation is obtained from the pharmacist to proceed with the order. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the product according to prescription or order.

    Medication or scheduled products are selected according to organisational procedures under the direct supervision of the pharmacist.

    Remaining medication or product on hand is counted and the register is balanced according to organisational policy.

    Registers are balanced and recorded according to instruction.

    Duly authorised products are placed in the appropriate sealed containers according to the organisational requirements.

    Forms and documents are prepared according to legal requirements.

    Appropriate forms and documents include delivery notes, invoices, export documentation and permits.

    Sealed packs are appropriately labelled and identified to enable tracking.

    The legal requirements relating to the handling and destruction of unusable scheduled products are explained.

    Products which are no longer usable or which have been returned are brought to the attention of the pharmacist.

    Products which require destruction are isolated according to organisational policy to prevent accidental use.

    Appropriate documents and registers are completed according to organisational requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
  • Legislation requires Schedule 6 and specified products to be locked away and the key is always under the control of the pharmacist. The pharmacist assistant may only participate in the issuing and handling of these products if the pharmacist is present.
  • Specified scheduled medication and substances are issued in original sealed packaging and therefore do not require splitting, weighing out or measuring.
