PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for people who are required to analyse samples by means of x-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

This unit standard is intended to promote general skills and knowledge of analysing samples by means of x-ray fluorescence spectrometry in the mining and minerals sector.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of occupational health, safety and environment.
  • Prepare samples for quantitative X-ray Fluorescence analysis.
  • Determine analyte concentrations in prepared samples.
  • Explain or deal with problems relating to X-ray Fluorescence analysis.

    Demonstrate and apply knowledge of occupational health, safety and environmental factors relating to x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Occupational hazards and risks pertaining to the preparation of samples for X-ray Fluorescence analysis are identified and explained with reference to occupational health and safety and environmental impact. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate preventive measures to deal with occupational hazards and risks are described in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required fit for purpose personal protective equipment is used in accordance with legal and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Work is conducted to meet occupational health, safety and environmental standards in accordance with specified requirements.

    Occupational health, safety and environmental issues must include:

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment required for the preparation of samples is identified and their functions are described in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include one of the following prepared samples:
  • Briquettes.
  • Glass beads.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment is used and maintained in accordance with legal and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reagents required for the sample preparation are identified and their function explained in accordance with operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The sample is prepared and the physical characteristics of the prepared sample are ensured to be in accordance with operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The occupational hazards and risks pertaining to the preparation of samples for X-ray Fluorescence analysis are monitored and the significant ones encountered are responded to in accordance with specified requirements.

    Determine analyte concentration in prepared samples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The basic principles of X-ray fluorescence is explained with reference to the analyses performed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include one of the following prepared samples:
  • Briquettes.
  • Glass beads.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The principal components of the X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and auxiliary equipment are identified and their primary functions are described in accordance with operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principal components must include:
  • Sample changer.
  • Tube.
  • Carousel.
  • Cooling system.
  • Vacuum system.
  • Gas supply system.
  • Instrument software.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment is examined, verified, used and maintained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Instrument is corrected for drift. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Quality control procedures are applied in accordance with operational requirements.

    Samples are sequenced, appropriate programme selected and analyte concentration is determined in accordance with operational requirements.

    The specified requirements and appropriate preventive or corrective actions are described or dealt with in accordance with operational requirements.
