PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the sociological issues affecting established operational conservation areas. Achievement this Unit standard will enhance the learner's holistic understanding of a society and the importance of consideration of the relationship between the community and conservation. It wil also enhance working relationships in the attaining of established conservation objectives in the area of operation.

  • Evaluate the impact of the sociological features on the environment.
  • Evaluate the impact of the environment on the social features of the community within the area of operation.
  • Evaluate the impact of integrated sociological principles within area of operation.

    An overview is given of the most important customs, cultural, traditional and religions practiced by communities within the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An outline is provided of the economic systems that communities have adopted within the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Baseline studies are conducted to determine key sociological features within the area of operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Population dynamics; income, facilities and resource availability and usage.

    Evaluate the impact of the sociological features on the environment.

    A description is given of the effect of the sociological features on communities within the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of the sociological features on the natural environment is identified within the area of operation as to determine its impact on conservation objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effect of the sociological features on the economic system existing within the area of operation is assessed as to determine its impact on conservation objectives.

    Evaluate the impact of the environment on the social features of the community within the area of operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The impact of the environment on the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the area of operation is assessed in terms of the impact on conservation objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lifestyle changes that have been forced on communities within the area of operation are identified in terms of its impact on the relationship between the community and conservation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons are outlined for the conversion to a cash economy within the area of operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Benefits accruing to both the community and to conservation.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Evaluate the impact of integrated sociological principles within area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The rationale for a poverty relief strategy to enhance the relationship between role-players are outlined within the area of operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Role-players include members of the community as well as the private and public conservation environment.

    A study on the sustainability of the livelihoods of communities within the area of operation are conducted through the incorporation of participatory rural appraisal methods.

    The impact of community-based natural resource management initiatives are evaluated within the area of operation.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
