PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is aimed at individuals required to monitor and regulate the harvesting of both flora and fauna in support of established conservation objectives. Harvesting of natural resources will be conducted through the use and application of appropriate harvesting procedures for purposes of collection and recording of biological data applicable to the area of operation.
On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. |

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Select appropriate harvesting procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Appropriate harvesting techniques for flora and fauna are selected to ensure compliance with organisational procedures and the requirements of relevant legislation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Species, plant parts, bags limits, seasonality, sex, size and age classes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The correct flora and fauna species are harvested in the correct locality by means of the correct methods. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Harvesting of flora and fauna is carried out according to occupational health and safety procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Harvesting activities are monitored to ensure that they are appropriate. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Collect and record biological data of the specimens captured. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Data is collected to provide an accurate picture of the harvesting of flora and fauna. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
A record is kept of the required biological data of the specimens captured, such as size, weight, gender, precise location, adherence to bag limits (where relevant), adherence to permit conditions (where relevant), amount landed, weight and numbers (catch returns). |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Data is interpreted for the purpose of monitoring and regulating resource harvesting within the area of operation. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Supervise the harvesting process. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Steps are taken to ensure that the agreed-to 'rules of harvest' are effectively communicated and upheld. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The harvesting process is supervised in such a manner that sound human relations are maintained at all times. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The harvesting of resources is supervised in such a manner that is in line with specified conservation management objectives. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Assess the effect of the harvest in order to effectively manage the area of operation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The harvest is measured in a practical, efficient and timeous manner. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
A harvest report is prepared containing all the information required to maintain a harvest management system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
An assessment is made of the harvest in order to make a judgment on the extent to which conservation management objectives were achieved. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
