PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals required to monitor and regulate the harvesting of both flora and fauna in support of established conservation objectives. Harvesting of natural resources will be conducted through the use and application of appropriate harvesting procedures for purposes of collection and recording of biological data applicable to the area of operation.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Select appropriate harvesting procedures.
  • Collect and record biological data of the specimens captured.
  • Supervise the harvesting process.
  • Assess the effect of the harvest in order to effectively manage the area of operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate harvesting techniques for flora and fauna are selected to ensure compliance with organisational procedures and the requirements of relevant legislation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Species, plant parts, bags limits, seasonality, sex, size and age classes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct flora and fauna species are harvested in the correct locality by means of the correct methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Harvesting of flora and fauna is carried out according to occupational health and safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Harvesting activities are monitored to ensure that they are appropriate.

    Collect and record biological data of the specimens captured.

    Data is collected to provide an accurate picture of the harvesting of flora and fauna. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A record is kept of the required biological data of the specimens captured, such as size, weight, gender, precise location, adherence to bag limits (where relevant), adherence to permit conditions (where relevant), amount landed, weight and numbers (catch returns). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Data is interpreted for the purpose of monitoring and regulating resource harvesting within the area of operation.

    Supervise the harvesting process.

    Steps are taken to ensure that the agreed-to 'rules of harvest' are effectively communicated and upheld.

    The harvesting process is supervised in such a manner that sound human relations are maintained at all times.

    The harvesting of resources is supervised in such a manner that is in line with specified conservation management objectives.

    Assess the effect of the harvest in order to effectively manage the area of operation.

    An assessment is made of the harvest in order to make a judgment on the extent to which conservation management objectives were achieved.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
