PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in the maintaining of road networks through the operating of road maintenance equipment in a nature conservation area. Learners will obtain an understanding of the relevant legislative requirements of road infrastructure maintenance and will be able to maintain road networks in a safe manner to enhance infrastructure in the area of operation.

The learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the legislative constraints and plan for the maintenance of roads in the area of operation.
  • Perform maintenance actions on roads in accordance with maintenance plans.
  • Undertake maintenance on equipment used for maintenance of roads.
  • Identify and report on the factors influencing the maintenance of roads.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the legislative constraints in planning for the maintenance of roads in the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview of the legislation and regulations pertaining to the maintenance of different types of roads in conservation areas is given and the relevant constraints identified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    National, provincial, municipal, Fencing act, Health and Safety, management plan of area of operation, National Environmental Management Act, Environmental Impact Assessments.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Maintenance problems are identified with regard to roads within the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A maintenance plan is developed under supervision of the Conservation Manager in order to resolve identified problems with regard to roads within the area of operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Prioritization of actions, materials, equipment, seasonality, visitor seasonality and usage, resources, basic project management, site preparation, drainage, filling, signage, outsourcing.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform maintenance actions on roads in accordance with maintenance plans.

    Initiate preparation actions in accordance with accepted maintenance plan.

    Appropriate safety and operating procedures are communicated to staff and implemented on site.

    A demonstration is given of correct road maintenance techniques and procedures.

    A demonstration is given of the correct operation of road maintenance equipment relevant to the area of operation.

    Maintenance actions are performed and the site cleaned in accordance with the accepted maintenance plan.

    An inspection is carried out following the completion of a road maintenance project and a maintenance report is completed.

    The maintenance of equipment is planned as to ensure the effective maintaining of roads in the operational area.

    Required interventions are communicated as to ensure the maintaining of equipment used for road maintenance.

    Maintenance actions are performed according to reported needs and intervention requirements.

    Maintaining of tools and equipment, safe-keeping and storage of equipment.

    Identify and report on the factors influencing the maintenance of roads.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Factors and trends that contribute toward the degradation of roads relevant to the area of operation, are identified and evaluated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fauna usage, erodability of soil types, drainage, microclimates, visitor seasonality and usage, construction materials, geographic factors, cost.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Shortcomings and problem areas are pointed out and suggestions for improvements to future road maintenance interventions and plans are made. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A report is written on the results of the evaluation and submitted as per organisational requirements.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
