PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners within the Safety in Society and Sovereignty of the State sub-field who work in the bomb disposal environment and who need to have an embedded understanding of explosive ordinances. This unit standard is for learners who will deal with foreign and authorised explosive ordnance. The learner will be able to identify explosive ordnance and describe their functions and operating principles. They will also be able to describe the various components of explosive ordnance.

This unit standard will enable learners to understand markings on explosive ordnance and packaging. The explosive ordnance is a highly regulated environment and learners will have the competencies to comply with legal prescripts when dealing with explosive ordnance. Learners will further be able to use these competencies during later learning to dispose of explosive ordinances. The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will lead to a safer society for South African citizens.

  • Explosive ordnances refers but is not limited to mortar bombs, rockets, missiles, grenades and landmines.
  • Foreign ordnance refers to unauthorised ordnance not approved in terms of the current Explosives Act.
  • Authorised ordnance refer to ordnance which are approved in terms of the current Explosives Act.
