PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for persons working in the electronic environment. Learners will be to describe and use a basic DC power supply, perform fault finding and build a DC power supply.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are capable of:
  • Describing and using basic DC power supplies.
  • Building DC power supply.
  • Performing fault finding.
  • Measuring regulation and ripple of the power supply.

  • Communication skills at NQF Level 3.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe and use basic DC power supplies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A basic power supply circuit is described by means of a circuit diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Various stages of power supply are identified and explained by means of wave forms and voltages. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Build DC power supply. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An understanding of the safety features that needs to be build in a power supply is demonstrated through the use of fuses, switches and protected output. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Components ratings are identified and selected in order to prevent malfunctioning. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform fault finding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Logical procedures are demonstrated in isolating faulty components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for the fault are identified and describe in order to take corrective action. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Measure regulation and ripple of the power supply.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Conditions of measurement are applied during the testing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Calculations of regulation and the ripple factor are performed using the standard method. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Measurements of regulation and ripple factors are compared to theoretical calculations for consistency.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
