PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Sovereignty of the State sub-field who wish to work in the maritime environment. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge of security procedures and requirements needed to maintain security on a warship, which is needed to operate with confidence onboard a warship.
The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will contribute to the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens. ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
A description is given of the purpose of security rounds whilst the vessel is alongside with reference to unrestricted access to the ship and breach of security measures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Personnel are scheduled and assigned to routine security duties in a manner that ensures that security is not compromised and that all personnel are sufficiently rested, ready for duty and relieved at appropriate intervals. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Security rounds are conducted in a manner that is consistent with their purpose and standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Security documentation is completed after security rounds and forwarded to the relevant authority within the appropriate timeframes. |

Security breaches are dealt with within a time frame appropriate to the severity of the breach. |

Standard operating procedures include those for AWKWARD state 1, AWKWARD state 2, AWKWARD state 3 and AWKWARD state 4. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
A description is given of the vessels readiness for each readiness state according to each emergency situation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Vessel readiness includes sea boat, keys, weapons and equipment, charges and equipment, diving equipment, recall list, watertight integrity and manning state. |

An explanation is given of the purpose of IMPI kill cards with reference to the required actions for various personnel on the duty watch in achieving the required state of readiness for each emergency situation. |
