PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who wish to work in the maritime environment. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge of ship construction, which is needed to operate with confidence onboard a ship.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of different ship compartments.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of damage control zones.
  • Explain onboard systems for fighting fire and floods.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of different ship compartments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different compartments of a ship are located and identified on systems drawings and on the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the purpose of each compartment on a ship with reference to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the ventilation system inside each compartment with reference to the circulation of air from and to each compartment and the role of ventilation system balancing lines in preventing the spread of smoke during a fire. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given in terms of precautionary measures to be taken for hazardous equipment situated inside each compartment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Components served by damage control and automated fire fighting systems are identified on systems drawings and on the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Escape routes to and from each compartment are identified on systems drawings.

    Demonstrate an understanding of damage control zones.

    Damage control zones and the respective compartments they incorporate are located and identified on systems drawings and on the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given of the operating principles of the damage control zones with special reference to their application during fire fighting exercises. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given in terms of the composition, application, purpose and function of A60 bulkheads with reference to the spread of heat and fires, damage limitation and impact on vessel operational capability. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Application includes but is not limited to key bulkheads and compartments.

    Explain onboard systems for fighting fire and floods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of systems and equipment used to fight fires and floods in terms of their capacity and purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Systems and equipment used to fight fire and floods and their activation points are located and identified on a ship. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Systems and equipment includes compartments served by automated fire fighting systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the principles, methods and circumstances of activating fire, flood and damage control systems and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given of manual back-up systems in terms of their activation and operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An estimation is made of the time it would take to suppress a fire in each compartment based on fire fighting systems and equipment available.
