PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who wish to work in the maritime environment. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will achieve the knowledge and practical competencies required to supervise the loading of cargo and stores on board a ship according to organisational standards.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Prepare for the loading and discharge of ordnance, cargo and stores.
  • Load, discharge, stow and secure ordnance, cargo and stores.

    Prepare for the loading and discharge of ordnance, cargo and stores.

    Personnel are tasked according to organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Preparation is conducted in accordance with prescribed safety rules and regulations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation includes but is not limited to the position and stability of the ship and the provision of fire fighting equipment and environmental protection equipment.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Load, discharge, stow and secure ordnance, cargo and stores.

    The task is carried out in accordance with established safety rules and regulations.

    Task refers either to the loading, discharging, stowing or securing of ordnances, cargo and stores.

    The task is compliant with instructions of the supervising officer.

    Procedures and precautions are applied for handling hazardous cargo items. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Personal protective equipment is ensured to be worn and utilised by personnel handling hazardous cargo items. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Start up and shut down procedures for cargo loading and discharging equipment are applied according to operating instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Cargo handling equipment usage by personnel is ensured to comply with the manufacturer's recommendations and statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The necessary actions are taken in the event of irregularities, damage, or defects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Reports are submitted to the relevant authority on the condition of cargo and stores in the stipulated format.
