PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is intended for learners who wish to work in the maritime environment. This Unit Standard will give the learner the opportunity to develop essential knowledge of safety procedures so as to ensure the safety of personnel during routine and special operations as well as emergency conditions.

A description is given of safety procedures and precautions for the carrying out of maintenance repair or replenishment work. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Special instructions appropriate to the conditions and consistent with safety procedures are given to personnel prior to the carrying out of maintenance, repair or replenishment work being scheduled. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Instructions refers to instruction related to the safety of the ship and equipment, use of a fire arm, controlling security at main entrance point, safety of personnel in inclement weather and heavy surging. |

Hazards include welding, cathodic protection, ammunition, explosives and pyrotechnics and combustible materials. |

A description is given of work activity safety procedures taken to prevent injury to personnel. |

Work activity includes personnel working over the side of the ship, personal working aloft and routine safety precautions such as turning main engines and engaging shafts, operating sonar in harbour. |
