PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who wish to work in the maritime environment. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge of alarm systems, their response to specific conditions and the application of appropriate measures of a ship, which is needed to operate with confidence onboard a ship.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain alarm systems.
  • Respond to different types of alarms.
  • Complete alarm administration and documentation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain alarm systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Alarm system components, associated sensors and alarm activating points are located by compartment on systems drawings and on the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of alarm system components in terms of their purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Alarm activation for each alarm type is demonstrated according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given of the fire detection system with reference to links between the fire detection system and the general alarm system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A description is given of the lengths of delays till activation of audio alarms with reference to the implications of equipment, ship and personnel safety and the required response time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    An explanation is given of the principles of operation, capabilities and limitations of each communications system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    An explanation is given of the process to be followed when an alarm is accidentally activated.

    All equipment and systems are checked in order to ensure serviceability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of emergency alarms associated procedures with reference to the required announcements and in accordance with safety rules and guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Response actions are taken according to safety guidelines and standard operating procedures and with the degree of urgency appropriate to the situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Commands associated with alarms are given clearly and using naval terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Alarms are sounded accurately and appropriately to the emergency and transmitted in accordance with specified procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Complete alarm administration and documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information is collected from emergency supervisory personnel and reported accurately to the relevant authority as per standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relevant communication documentation and templates are completed and submitted to the relevant authority with the degree of urgency appropriate to the situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Documentation and templates associated with accidental alarm activation are completed and submitted to the appropriate authorities within the agreed time frames.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
