PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is intended for learners who wish to work in the maritime environment. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will have developed specific skills associated with maintaining a duty watch, together with the essential knowledge needed to implement routine duties and maintain a seamanlike state, which is needed to operate with confidence onboard a ship.
The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will contribute to the preservation of human life and the defence of South African ships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens. An explanation is given of duties associated with the ship's daily harbour routine and identifies all naval personnel involved. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
An inspection is conducted to ensure all watchkeeping positions and stations are adequately manned for pre-determined shifts. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
A description is given of specific safety precautions to ensure the safety of personnel and that of the ship. |

Access to the ship is carefully controlled and monitored in accordance with safety and security regulations. |

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
An explanation is given of standard operating procedures for inspection rounds in terms of the inspection duties of the Officer of the Day. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Inspection duties include checking seaman like appearance, neatness and cleanliness, condition and positioning of flags, equipment appropriately covered/uncovered, cleanliness of the quay, alertness and dress of sentries and hatches, doors or flaps opened or closed. |

Inspection rounds are schedule in accordance with standard operating procedures and standing orders. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Documentation associated with routine upper deck inspection rounds is completed at the end of each round and submitted to the appropriate supervisory personnel within agreed timeframes. |

An explanation is given of the authority of the Officer of the Day with regards to inspection rounds. |
