PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who wish to work in the maritime environment. Fire on board a ship is one of the ever present and most feared threats to any crew. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will achieve the knowledge and practical competencies required to plan and execute a fire fighting exercise on board a ship in order to assess the crew's preparedness in the event of an actual fire onboard.

  • Verify the preparedness of crew and fire fighting equipment.
  • Execute the fire-fighting exercise.
  • Evaluate fire-fighting exercise.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for fire fighting exercises. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The regulations and requirements governing the preparation and organisation of fire fighting exercises are applied in terms of organisational requirements and standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The specific procedures for initiating a fire fighting exercise are applied in terms of the associated authorities and supervisory personnel affected, the information they require and the required documentation to be completed.

    Specific procedures include logging-in and logging-off the Integrated Platform Management System.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The alarms associated with fire fighting exercise are identified and applied in accordance with organisational codes and signals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fire fighting training is planned and scheduled for duty watch personnel and crew. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Verify the preparedness of crew and fire fighting equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fire fighting and related damage control equipment is checked for serviceability, correct placement and settings. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment and systems includes but is not limited to remote systems, safety markings and tags on equipment, personal protective clothing and equipment, flood valves, BA (barye) pressures, fire pumps, settings on remote activated fixed fire-fighting systems, salvage systems settings, portable fire-fighting equipment and Carbon Dioxide systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fire fighting teams are briefed in terms of their duties and responsibilities during the exercise. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Crew inspect personal protective clothing and equipment for serviceability as in accordance with warship safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Personal protective clothing and equipment selected by personnel is checked for suitability for the type and nature of the exercise fire and allocated responsibilities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Execute the fire-fighting exercise. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fire fighting personnel are directed in accordance with their allocated duties and responsibilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment selected by the fire fighting teams and crew is verified to be appropriate for the type and nature of the fire. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The equipment is verified as being correctly directed and operated to control and extinguish the fire in accordance with operating instructions and organisational drills. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fire-fighting exercises are carried out within the required time and in a safe manner so as to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible and minimise damage to the vessel and injury to personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Commands given are clear, concise and correct according to maritime terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The safety of the ship and personnel is monitored during the fire fighting exercise through constant observation and feedback.

    Evaluate the fire-fighting exercise.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A debriefing session is conducted in a positive and constructive manner which contributes to the development of effective future fire fighting activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information pertinent to the evaluation of the exercise is gathered from all relevant sources and involved personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The training log and the ship's log book are completed at the conclusion of the exercise. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An evaluation report is prepared which complies with format and content requirements and is forwarded to the appropriate authority via approved channels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Information relating to the fire fighting exercise is disseminated via approved channels to assist with refinement of equipment, responses and procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
