PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended, but is not restricted to, learners within the Sovereignty of the State sub-field who wish to work in the maritime environment. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will achieve the knowledge and practical competencies required to plan and execute ceremonial duties on board a ship according to organisational standards.

The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will contribute to the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the procedures for special ceremonial duties.
  • Plan and execute daily ceremonial duties.
  • Explain the procedures for dressing the ship.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of the purpose and meaning of different types of ceremonial discs with reference to the formality of the visit, the required dress and ceremony required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the purpose of bridge cards with reference to command seniority and ceremonial requirements on leaving harbour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given of procedures applied as marks of respect for passing ships and visiting officers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A description is given of procedures for piping the side with reference to personnel entitled to this compliment and applicable times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A description is given of procedures for half masking with reference to circumstances and/or persons entitled to this mark of respect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A description is given of procedures for gun salutes with reference to circumstances and/or persons entitled to this mark of respect.

    A description is given of marks of respect for ships entering or leaving the harbour in terms of specific actions required.

    A description is given of personnel involved in the execution of daily ceremonial procedures.

    Colours are raised and lowered at the correct times and with the correct ceremony.

    Sunset is marked with the appropriate signals and lowering of flags.

    An explanation is given of specific events, occasions and actions for dressing the ship with reference to the roles and responsibilities of warship personnel involved in the operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different flags are correctly identified in terms of their meaning and associated response and action. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given of what flags that would necessitate the initiation of special safety precautions with reference to the associated safety precautions in displaying those flags.
