PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who are required to determine options for processing of rough diamond gemstones.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the computer equipment and tools used to evaluate options in design for rough diamond gemstones and describe their application.
  • Determine the optimum shape of polished diamonds from rough diamond gemstones.
  • Present analysed stones for examination.
  • Conduct post-computer evaluation reconciliation, checking and security activities.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of processing of diamond gemstones in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Requirements for security of diamonds.
  • Use of a loupe to examine diamond gemstones.
  • Basic p c skills (keyboard and mouse operation).

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The equipment referred to in this standard has the ability to map the internal features of the gemstone and is able to link the option analysis to pre-loaded price lists.

    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The computer equipment and components used to evaluate options in design for rough diamond gemstones are identified and their use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stages in evaluation are explained in terms of the use of the equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The stages must include:
  • Scanning photos.
  • Setting up for evaluation.
  • Calculating the rough mapped.
  • Identification of inclusions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The methods of evaluating options of rough diamond gemstones that are to be marked are described and explained in terms of accuracy and the ability to determine the outcome of parting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The options for analysing different shapes and making different cuts when analysing rough gemstones for marking are described and their effect explained in terms of the determination of the final design and estimated valuation of polished gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The limitations of using computers to evaluate options are explained in terms of the accuracy of mapping internal inclusions and recognition of grain and grain related problems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Practices are explained to maintain housekeeping, security of diamond gemstones, safety in the workplace and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and profitability. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Determine the optimum shape of polished diamonds from rough diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The computer is prepared for operation and checked to be in good working order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The diamond gemstone to be evaluated is selected and positioned in the equipment, ready for analysis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The computer is activated and the gemstone observed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The location of marking lines and the optimal location of the table(s) when analysing rough diamond gemstones are described in terms of size of stones, types of cuts, predicted weight loss and predicted valuations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The types of cuts must include:
  • Round stones.
  • Oval shapes.
  • Marquise shapes.
  • Pear shapes.
  • Heart shapes.
  • Emerald shape.
  • Radiant shape.
  • Trillion shape.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The options for evaluation are determined according to the instructions in the parcel and the feedback from the analysis by the computer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Hints and techniques for rough analysing diamond gemstones are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate techniques. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Present analysed stones for examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The evaluated rough diamond gemstone is removed from the computer and the diamond gemstone is examined to ensure that indicative mark from the computer is clearly visible. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The results of the evaluation options are printed out, recorded in the parcel and the evaluated gemstone is secured in the parcel in accordance with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The parcel containing the evaluated gemstone is sent for checking by a Marker to confirm the marking line, or to issue further instructions, in accordance with workplace specific instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The returned parcel is either processed for onward transmission for processing, or further evaluations are undertaken, according to the instructions in the parcel. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct post-computer evaluation reconciliation, checking and security activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Evaluated gemstones are returned to the appropriate storage facility/receptacle and are reconciled to the parcel instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reconciled must include:
  • Checking the number of diamond gemstones to parcel instructions.
  • Recording the optimal designs, predicted shapes, weight loss and valuations after processing.
  • Taking remedial action where necessary in line with workplace specific procedures.

    Good housekeeping is exercised after rough analysing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean hands, equipment and accessories.
  • Operate start up and shut down procedures in accordance with specified requirements.
  • Diamonds and parcels are secured in the appropriate facilities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after indicating window opening in terms of the workplace security system.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
