PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people training to become diplomats or to work in diplomatic contexts.

  • Demonstrating understanding of the context, principles and objectives of the African Agenda in SA foreign policy.
  • Demonstrating understanding of the context, principles and objectives of the Global Agenda of SA foreign policy.

    Descriptions are provided of the central tenets of the African Renaissance and what constitutes the African Agenda. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Explanations are provided of the importance of the African Agenda as a strategic objective in SA foreign policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The structure, content and issues within SA multilateral relations in Africa are identified and clarified through actual cases.

    Explanations are provided with illustrations on the importance of the African Agenda in driving South-South relations and North-South Dialogue. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An analysis is provided of how South Africa uses international structures and organisations to improve social and economic development in Africa in parallel to driving national interest.

    Key theories of international relations are described and related to the manner in which SA determines and conducts its foreign policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An overview is provided of SA multilateral relations and strategic objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An outline is provided of key reforms of the United Nations and their impact on SA foreign policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    SA foreign policy objectives are described in terms of north-south relations and south-south cooperation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Various factors that impact on international relations are explained, in particular the mainstreaming of gender and the role of religious diversity.
