PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Safety in Society sub-field who work/wish to work in the Correctional Services as Corrections Officials. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent Corrections Officials who by providing security services in a correctional context, contribute to a safer society for the citizens of South Africa. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to conduct security related duties in the correctional centre, including the handling of emergency situations, during the day and night.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Perform security duties in the unit during the day and night.
  • Facilitate visits for inmates.
  • Manage emergency situations in a correctional centre.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Perform security duties in the unit during the day and night. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Lock up and lock down is conducted according to operational procedures and policies. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Lock up and lock down includes but is not limited to the handling of keys, an inmate count, the verification of documentation and the locking/unlocking of the unit during the day and night.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Security searches are conducted in accordance with organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Searches includes but is not limited to inmates, possessions and belongings of inmates and infrastructure.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Inmate complaints and requests are processed in accordance with policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Processing activities includes but is not limited to recording of complaints, request recorded in register and Independent Prison Visitors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Movement of inmates in correctional centre is controlled according to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Controlling activities includes but is not limited to identification of offenders, control over offenders, handling of cleaners and movement of inmates between units within the correctional centre.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Guard duties are performed in accordance with policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Duties include but are not limited to precautionary measures, prevention of suicide of inmates, protection of inmates, protection of external service providers, protection of officials and protection of officials.

    Facilitate visits for inmates.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Duties before, during and after visits are conducted in accordance with policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Security breaches, incidents and risks are recorded and reported according to standing instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the consequences of not performing duties according to organisational procedures in relation to given scenarios/case studies. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Manage emergency situations in a correctional centre. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Emergencies include but are not limited to assaults, riots and unrest, fighting in cells, escapes, ill health, natural disasters, hostage situations and epidemic outbreak.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of the range of potential emergencies in a correctional centre according to their characteristics. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of steps to be taken in relation to the nature of the identified emergency. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Emergency situations are handled according to organizational policies and procedures for a given scenario.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
