PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to fancy cut square shaped diamond gemstones. This process is known as fancy making.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to make square shaped fancy diamond gemstones and describe their application.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for making square shaped fancy diamond gemstones.
  • Locate diamond gemstones into appropriate equipment for making fancy shapes.
  • Make fancy square shaped diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct post-fancy making cleaning, checking and security activities.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Advance use of loupe to examine diamond gemstones.
  • Identify polishing grains and planes in diamond gemstones.

    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to persons making fancy shape diamond gemstones under minimal supervision.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the equipment and tools used to make square shaped fancy diamond gemstones and describe their application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tools and their components used to make square shaped fancy diamond gemstones are identified and their use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of fancy making is explained in relation to the process of diamond processing and the make and value of the finished polished diamond gemstone.

    The make for square shaped fancy diamond gemstones must include:

    Problems that can be encountered when making square shaped fancy sawn and makeable diamond gemstones are described in terms of types of problems, key features and implications for methods to overcome such problems.

    Advanced fancy cutting and polishing hints and techniques for making square shaped fancy diamond gemstones for sawn and makeable stones are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate processing techniques.

    Locate diamond gemstones into appropriate equipment for making fancy shapes.

    Stones received are checked and examined to determine the appropriate process to create the required fancy shape.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required facets and dimensions for the selected square shaped fancy diamond are determined in consultation with the Marker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stones are set in the appropriate equipment for the selected process for making the selected fancy shape according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Appropriate settings on the selected equipment are made for making the selected fancy shape according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The equipment is ensured to have been correctly prepared for making the selected fancy shape, before applying the stone to the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Occupational health and safety hazards are monitored during fancy stone making and remedial action is taken where necessary.

    Make fancy square shaped diamond gemstones.

    Learners must demonstrate their ability to make four different square shaped fancy cut diamonds to the required standards.

    Stones are processed using an appropriate methodology to address the given requirements for the selected fancy shape in line with the requirements as indicated by the Marker and within defined quality and output standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The processing equipment is frequently checked for any defects during the process of making fancy shapes. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The squareness and parallels of dimensions are frequently checked with the appropriate measuring equipment to ensure compliance with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Occupational health and safety hazards are monitored during making of fancy shapes and remedial action is taken where necessary.

    Weights of diamond gemstones are ensured to be within the laid down tolerance levels after making fancy shapes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones are removed from equipment after fancy making, cleaned and inspected for quality of finish in relation to workplace specifications. Remedial action required is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Housekeeping is exercised after making fancy shaped diamond gemstones in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean equipment and accessories.
  • Replace tools, equipment and unused consumables into correct storage facilities.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.

    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after making fancy shapes in accordance with the workplace security system.
